Immigration Education and Zines

Collaborative Interdisciplinary Social Justice Unit Plan

With fellow educators Alex Bromwell, Allisón Chalco, Iyla Ollinger, and Jennie Wahlstrom, I co-created an interdisciplinary month-long unit on immigration, which culminates in the production of a zine. Through an in-depth orientation to immigration statistics (statistics), immigration policies current (ethnic studies) and past (history), students will develop their capacities to meaningfully interpret facts and critically examine the lenses through which conversations about immigration are filtered. After rigorous research, including class data collection and community interviews, students will present and distribute their findings in D.I.Y. zines to educate a particular audience. This unit aims to develop students' capacities to analyze and synthesize information, as we as to create an accessible educational tool for increased community engagement.
