Hello! Here's a cover letter outlining my goals for the coming years. Perhaps your program and I would be a good match!

As a 2018 grad of the Mills College Teachers for Tomorrow’s Schools credential program, I have a year's student teaching experience in a high school visual arts classroom in Hayward at East Bay Arts.

I strive to develop the aesthetic capabilities and creative agency of all of my students, from the novices to the aspiring professional artists. My extensive background in TEFL and fine arts education from University of California Santa Cruz make me an ideal candidate for your school. While I am relatively new to teaching visual arts, I have taught English in many capacities over the last six years in both urban and rural environments, to students from ages 4 to 72.  Before that, I was a writing tutor and Teacher’s Assistant for a public art university class. I have also been a traveling docent with the San Jose Museum of Art through their programs Let’s Look at Art (for elementary to middle school students) and Art In the Dark (for high schoolers). I have taught lessons on visual literacy in over 50 classrooms, facilitating student-led discussions about artwork from many time periods and cultures.

My goal is to combine my love of teaching, enthusiasm for all art media, TEFL experience, and aspirations for social justice into an impactful teaching career in the Bay Area. I believe that my eclectic education experience, as well as my training in drawing, sculpting, painting, photography, ceramics, performance art, art history, and art criticism would serve the Bay Area community well.  If you believe we'd be a good match, I gladly welcome a chance to talk.

Sincerely,

Izzie Nixon
